Brantley Strickland of the S.C. Regional Development Alliance spoke to Walterboro City Council during its meeting on August 3rd about a new program that is in the works for the region.
Walterboro City Council then approved the alliance’s recommendation to participate in the program, which is sponsored by Retail Strategy, a marketing company.
“We are looking for ways to improve the quality of life for people in our region, and that includes more retail and commercial opportunities,” said Strickland.
According to Strickland, Retail Strategy studies the region in order to find business partners to come to the area such as restaurants, stores, and entertainment.
The company investigates local income averages, education, need, health care, schools, demographics and metrics in order to compile a strategy to bring retail to the community.
The company will not only provide those demographics and search for interested businesses, but will also provide training to local individuals about ways to market the area.
Retail Strategy will find us ways to target potential businesses in the community, Strickland added. “And the best part is that this won’t cost the city any money,” he said.
The funding for the program is coming from a USDA grant to increase business development in rural areas.
A webinar on the program will be free to the city on September 15. On December 7, Walterboro will host other municipalities at the city’s Wildlife Center for a Retail Strategy Academy and training. Strickland said he is excited about the program being utilized in Colleton and the City of Walterboro.
“Retail Strategy will provide numbers, information and ideas needed to successfully promote what we have to offer here and bring in new businesses,” he said.
